turns a computer into a small home recording studio. The U-8 console provides all the controls including a mixing desk which can be used for audio and MIDI events, a transport system (as on a tape recorder), and a set of editing switches.

Using audio inputs it is possible to record from microphone and guitars (directly), and stereo keyboards (or similar) in combinations of two at a time.

The U-8 has a built in MIDI interface to connect synthesizer keyboards and drum machines.

Behind the hardware is a DSP (Digital Signal Processing) brain that provides over 130 effects. So a singer/song-writer can play a guitar while recording the melody and then add a cathedral ambience (reverb) to some ethereal vocals. Or a Jimi Hendrix wannabe can plug a guitar through a simulation effect to create a classic 60s riff.

Sequencing software is used to manage and manipulate audio or MIDI files. The U-8 comes with Cakewalk or Cubasis VST (a light version of CuBase).

MIDI performances are possible with software MIDI synthesizers - your sound card may already have one on board -- but for good results you need an external MIDI sound module. I ed the U-8 with a 32-voice KAWAI GMega.

The U-8 can be connected to a CD player, a DAT recorder or a minidisk - just like any other mixer.

There is only one MIDI IN and one MIDI OUT but it is possible to chain MIDI devices together.

With the help of the Getting Started manual, I had no trouble connecting the U-8 to a computer via the single USB cable.

The U-8 can be used in 3 different modes --- not connected to the PC at all like an external mixer, connected to the PC as a PC-controlled mixer and best of all, as an integrated mixer extension to Cubasis VST.

There are a lot of applications for a true MIDI mixer that this machine will not be any use for, but if you are trying to run up some new songs for Bardot it should do the job.

Using the U-8 and Cubasis is not difficult. Audio signals and MIDI sequencing are recorded onto your hard disk and all the operations can be viewed graphically on your monitor.

The EZ Recording function on the U-8 makes recording so easy a Monkee could do it (considering they probably only used four tracks think what you could do with the eight provided by the U-8).

Once the EZ Record start button is pushed a wizard takes over and guides you through the process of selecting input sources, digital effects and adjusting recording levels.

So, its possible to build up a drum track or string arrangement using a synthesizer keyboard or module and then add your own vocal and guitar audio or overdubs. Create the final stereo mix using the hardware faders and control knobs. Burn it to CD and Bardot will be history before you can say "Poison".

If you are looking for an easy, affordable, mouse-free mixing solution, the U-8 is well worth looking at.

A music store like Allans should even be able to provide a demonstration.

A 300MHz Pentium II, Windows 98, 64 MB of RAM, 100MB free disk space and a monitor capable of 800 x 600 resolution is recommended. A USB connection is needed.
